Hi, we are wanting to plan a trip to Phuket in 2009 and are taking our three kids with us. Kids ages are 18, 14 and 11. Can anyone please recommend places to stay and things to do while there. We would prefer somewhere close to everything and the beach.
Thanks.

I have just got back from phuket for the first time and stayed at the Patong Merlin, which was excellent. It has 3 pools, its close to everything (10 min walk to Bangla Road), it backs on to the beach. Things to do Phi Phi Island, James Bond and the canoes through the caves, Elephant trekking, Paintballing, Simon's and Fantasea, Shop, Shop and Shop......
Enjoy the trip

If you're interested in thai food do some of the cooking school they have on offer. Highly recommend Cooking with Pum at Pum's Restaurant on Rat U thit road and Phuket Cooking School.

I'm off in the next few days with 2 kids in tow. I shall report back upon return. We've been twice before with our children and we have all enjoyed our trips immensely. Stayed at Burasari in Patong - lovely boutique hotel with easy access to all things like shopping, restaurants etc. Previous trip we stayed at Jiva now called Kata Central Resort. Also very nice but drawbacks were location and non English speaking clientelle. My children always manage to forge new friendships around the pool which results in hours of play opportunities, unfortuanely not possible when they can't communicate. Check out the Seaview Patong - great prices if you need two rooms like us and central location. Many give it very good reviews. Ask me any specific questions and I shall endaevour to answer them.

USA Ex - pat sorry, no Im not familar with their lifestyle, I have never travelled to Phuket or out of Australia for that matter... this will be our first time.
Mooch and onmyway, thankyou. Alot of people I work with have recommended Patong Merlin and other hotels, but they havent taken kids with them so wasnt sure if they were "child friendly" hotels. We are looking for places that accomadate kids with lots for them to do with us.

Hi Binks, When I was at the Patong Merlin, there were quite a few families with kids and they seemed to be having a great time. Apparently you can get adjoining rooms 1 for you 1 for the kids.
I wouldn't book tours through the hotel as they can be quite expensive, book them through the little tour boxes that they have everywhere you will find its cheaper, especially if you have kids.
Your kids will be fine, they will never be bored!

Patong Metlin is a great hotel and very friendly staff and on the beach. Close to everthing if you like to walk and far enough away from the beat of Bangla rd if it is not your thing.
Happy holidays in 2009...
