I do know this discussion has taken place somewhere in the past but my searching skills turned up nil. So how do I go about using my mobile phone in Phuket at a reasonable cost? I seem to remember someone being advised to purchase a local sim card - is this the way to go?
Any information would be gratefully received.

Hi Mooch,
When I have travelled in the past I have just used my own mobile. I have only used it to call back to Australia once but it was so handy for smsing.
I think it was about 55 cents per sms. I'm with telstra in aust and have the phone set for international roaming, then telstra just piggy back off the local telecommunications company.
I'm not sure how this compares with purchasing a pre paid sim card though.

Hi, First time on telstra over here got back to a 330 AUD bill from 10 days because you pay both ways at their rates. Been here 8 days and ring and text home daily. So far up to my third 300 baht recharge card on 1-2 call. Much better.
enjoy

Shway sounds like a much better idea. I too had an enormous bill after my last trip - 70c per text soon adds up! Have had my phone unlocked today ready for Phuket!

Hi Mooch While we were in Bangkok we bought a 100baht International Calling Card at one of the many phone shops in MBK you can use it with your hotel phone or public phone (put in 10 baht for local call first)I'm not sure about mobiles and it only cost 2 baht per min to ring Oz their Web adress is http://www.thookdee.com. Thanks RED and Michelle, the tip regarding numbers is especially helpful. I never actually thought of recording the numbers I will be frequently using.
Once again sincere thanks for everyone's help!
