I am hearing mixed reports on the beaches of Penang. Can one swim in the water? Are the beaches nice? Or are we better off spending a few extra days in Georgetown and only making a short day trip to the beach? If worth a few days, can someone recommend a reasonable accomodation for 2 middle aged American couples, who disire most that it be clean and convenient - we don't need much luxury, thanks.

Penang beaches are ok, lots of jelly fish also. If you want to stay at the beach, there are many beach hotels/resorts there. Bear in mind from town to the beach is quite a distance and depending on traffic can take you up to 30 minutes. Middle ages couples with no kids i assume? Park Royal is fantastic. My favourite beach resort there. Else you are better off at Gurney Drive, nightlife, food, shopping. Gurney Hotel, which is all suites http://www.gurney-hotel.com.my/ or the http://www.evergreenhotel.net/ I have stayed in both, very nice hotels. Cheers.

Hi ArizonaJay, you could try the Lone Pine Hotel at Batu Feringgi Beach in Penang. I was there with my wife and found it to be most pleasurable. The surounding and ambiance was perfect for relaxation and privacy. The rooms were clean and the service was up to par. You could check out this site Lone Pine Hotel for further details. And during the evenings there is a night bazaar along the main road just 5 minutes casual walk from the hotel. We felt that the view of the sunset was just breathtaking from the hotel. Cheers \:\)
