I am hearing mixed reports on the beaches of Penang. Can one swim in the water? Are the beaches nice? Or are we better off spending a few extra days in Georgetown and only making a short day trip to the beach?
If worth a few days, can someone recommend a reasonable accomodation for 2 middle aged American couples, who disire most that it be clean and convenient - we don't need much luxury, thanks.

Penang beaches are ok, lots of jelly fish also. If you want to stay at the beach, there are many beach hotels/resorts there. Bear in mind from town to the beach is quite a distance and depending on traffic can take you up to 30 minutes.
Middle ages couples with no kids i assume? Park Royal is fantastic. My favourite beach resort there.
Else you are better off at Gurney Drive, nightlife, food, shopping. Gurney Hotel, which is all suites http://www.gurney-hotel.com.my/ or the http://www.evergreenhotel.net/
I have stayed in both, very nice hotels.
Cheers.
