Hi, we'll be arriving in Phuket in the latter half of June and we'll be staying in Patong. Neither of us have ever dived before and although we plan on doing a good amount of snorkeling, we'd like to try diving once. Just wondering if end of June still offers decent diving, as I fear the rains may 'darken' the waters too much?
Seeing how this is the low season what kind of prices are we looking at? We're looking at a half day course/dive, possibly near the beach (as I suspect the gal may too intimidated to go on boat and dive). If so, which beaches offer decent diving? We'll be renting a vehicle so we don't mind the drive from Patong if necessary.
It would seem that this Steven guy is a driving instructor and is very helpful with questions. Would like to hear from you if you can accommodate us, or possibly a referral to a colleague of yours if unable to help us.

Hey Joolz, no need to worry. The water won't be too "dark" for diving in June. In fact, it's a nice time to come diving. There are lots and lots of instructors on the island. I would offer to work with you on your training myself, but I'm booked up in the last half of June. My advice is to just come. You will have no trouble finding a convenient and helpful dive op near wherever you are staying.

Yes, come, no problem.
But: diving from the beach will normally not be possible, so count on a full day from the boat. This is normally very nice: relaxed diving, close to some lovely bays, nice and inviting calm water.
The rains hardly influence visibility in the area, since there is nearly no run off of rainwater into the divesites.
I am a good driver (I think) but by profession I am a diving instructor. Pick up in Patong is no problem, for me nor for most other DC's.

That is great to hear, I thought that 'low season' meant a bad season, but that apparently isn't the case for Thailand. If anything I welcome the fact that it isn't so busy and can for instance, rent a car for close to nothing. Our detour into Thailand just happened and totally by accident. So we're very excited about visiting this part of the world. And it is great to hear that there's little chance of it pouring rain 24/7.
Problem is, we only have 5 days there (I know, it sucks) and I don't know if I can convince my special one to devote a whole day to something I don't believe she's as excited about trying as I am. So not sure if the day long dive would go well with her, as we already have so much planned in our very short stay.
We're still a couple of weeks away, perhaps by the time I get there we should be able to figure something out that would still allow us to dive without going away for the entire day. thanks for the help.

Hello Joolz
As a PADI Master Instructor and dive center owner here in Phuket for the last 11 years I agree with what StevenL has said about no shore diving around Phuket Island durring the time period that you will be visiting. There is only one other option for not having to go out to the Islands as StevenL has recommended however to avoid dissapointment you may want to first check out one of the free introductory pool courses offered by the hotels that have diveshops with diving counters at their pools.
These pool intros are free and what better way to discover if your other half will enjoy the diving experience or not first under the comfortable and controled conditions of a pool. I hope this info helps and regards from Phuket.

Doubt it, since the op was asking about June, and your answer is from August. But maybe it helps somebody else for next year June

souljah, I also plan to dive in June as well, so hope it is nice conditions. I had planned to do a diving course before I go, but work is busy and time is running out! I hope I can still do a decent dive without the openwater cert. Thanks Adrian

Adrian,
You can always do a discover scuba diving experience at Racha Yai. Nice diving and a relaxed day out.

Steven, do you run these ones? Are they a full day or half? How many dives? how much? Thanks Adrian

Adey, *everybody* runs discover scuba programs. They can either be half-day (probably in a swimming pool, though, that time of year), or from a boat, in which case it will almost certainly be a full-day trip.
